Tutorial The Chateau De Chambord Description

The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture that blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Italian structures.[1]It is the largest castle in the Loire Valley, but was built to serve only as a hunting lodge for King François I, who maintained his royal residences at Château de Blois and at Château d'Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with several doubts, to Domenico da Cortona, whose wooden model for the design survived long enough to be drawn by André Félibien in the seventeenth century. Some authors, though, claim that the renaissance french architect Philibert Delorme had a considerable role in the Château's design. [2] Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty years of its construction (1519[3] ? 1547), during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu. In 1913 Marcel Reymond first suggested[4] that Leonardo da Vinci, a guest of King François at Clos Lucé near Amboise, was responsible for the original design, which reflects Leonardo's plans for a château at Romorantin for the King's mother, and his interests in central planning and double helical staircases; the discussion has not yet concluded.[5]. Nearing completion, King François showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old enemy, Emperor Charles V at Chambord

Shop For Inspiring Thirst: Vintage Selections from The Kermit Lynch Wine Brochure

Over All Rating Reviews :
If you're someone who has been buying, cellaring and enjoying wine for a long time, this book is an exercise in time travel not to be missed. It goes without saying that a compendium of Kermit's newsletters going back to 1974 will be chock full of colorful and witty writing, including more clever barbs directed at the Cult of the Point Score, heavily extracted and high alcohol "hedonistic fruit bombs," and a certain Emperor Who Has No Nose than you can shake a corkscrew at.

But the real fun here is seeing offerings like Francois Jobard's 1978 Meursault Genevrieres for $210 a case; or de Villaine's 1979 Aligote de Bouzeron for all of $72.90 a case and his 1991 Bourgogne rouge "La Digoine" for a princely $160 a case; or Raveneau's 1983s, ranging from the Butteaux for $120 a case to Valmur for $210 a case -- sorry, limit of six bottles on that Valmur, my salivating friend. Or howzabout being driven to tears by the listing for 1978 Henri Jayer Echezeaux at $480 a case on release, and the legendary 1978 Richebourg at $70 a bottle, with that pesky six bottle limit. Yes, it will make your heart skip a beat! The one that got away, indeed.

Also of interest is watching as KLWM introduces relatively "unknown" growers to the U.S., sometimes to find said growers becoming superstars and moving on to other (possibly greener?) pastures for distribution in our market -- Messrs. Jayer, de Montille, Dagueneau and Chave spring immediately to mind.

All in all, it's a truly entertaining wine lover's trip down memory lane. And while you may still regret not having snapped up all the '78 Jayer Richebourg you could afford (and cajole KLWM into selling to you) way back when, you no longer have to suffer the loss of all those KLWM newsletters you carelessly tossed out after reading them over the years. Most of them are right here, in one nice, neat, compact volume!

A good window to view the seldom seen facts about what's really happening in the French wineworld rather than the winetalk one usually hears in these hallowed halls. WOW! What a great book. It came from Amazon yesterday and I can't put it down. Humorous, clever, insightful, educational, entertaining and fun.
This 400 page book of selections from the 1974 to 2003 Kermit Lynch wine brochure rather reminds me of the old Peterman's catalogues. It is full of great wine stories and personalities interspersed with food and travel tips.
Lynch is quite opinionated, but an entertaining writer. I have learned a lot from this book and it has truly changed how I think about wine.

Tutorial Chateau d'Argol Description

The gothic setting of a lonely castle in the middle of thick, dense woods contrasts with the contemporary characters who inhabit it: a dissolute, rich and aimless young man who invites his best friend to stay in his newly-acquired chateau. The friend arrives not alone, but with a beautiful woman whose detached amorality disturbs both men.

Purchase Inspiring Thirst: Vintage Selections from The Kermit Lynch Wine Brochure

Over All Rating Reviews :
I quickly became addicted to the Kermit Lynch Newsletters (and wine) after moving to San Francisco in 1999. My stack of collected newsletters was often revisited and rearranged for convenience (ascending, descending, seasonally), and I eventually had to buy those scary extra large sized binder clips to hold them together. I've always regretted the relative lateness of my enlightenment (through Kermit's book (Adventures), store, and newsletters) to unfiltered, properly shipped, traditional, un-chaptalized wine. This book makes that regret even more painful.

I relived that moment when, as a child (hopefully), you discover time did not start with your birth. "What, Trignon was produced before 1998? And I'll never get to taste it? And it cost how much?"

While Inspiring Thirst did show me that the next Vieux Telegraphe is very likely lurking in my binder clipped collection of newsletters for very cheap, one thing I've realized is that just knowing the facts and history behind a wine (as most books give you) does nothing for the experience. A good storyteller is invaluable, and can make seemingly ordinary wines as special as anything the Bruniers have produced.

Order this book, subscribe to the newsletter, and hope they decide to release volume two soon before that binder clip starts to give way.

Where To Buy Inspiring Thirst: Vintage Selections from The Kermit Lynch Wine Brochure

Over All Rating Reviews :
Nearly 20 years ago I had the pleasure of reading Kermit Lynch's first book, "Adventures On the Wine Route." Back then I thought it was by far the best wine-related book I had ever read and my opinion hasn't changed. I would look forward to receiving the monthly Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant newsletters because they were so well-written. I would save them because they were such great reading material, and thought what a good book they would make.

Well, that's just what Mr. Lynch did, turned them into a book. His writings make me thirst for the wines he describes. The thing is, of course he is a salesman since he owns a wine shop, but he backs himself up by importing some mighty good wines. Seeing his name as the importer on a bottle of wine inspires confidence.

Inspiring Thirst is a collection of selections from Mr. Lynch's monthly wine letter and I found it fascinating to follow the journey from its beginnings up to the time the book was published. And also to be in wonderment at how low the prices used to be on such great bottles of wine - unbelievable.

The author definitely has a way with words and leaves no doubt that he loves what he does. The selections in the book, just like every newsletter or brochure he has printed, is a learning experience. It is far from the typical wine shop mailing that screams the point score awarded it by Robert Parker or the Wine Spectator and how limited the production is of that latest boutique find. You will find no point scores in Mr. Lynch's world, nor will you find attempts to stir up a frenzy over the most recent "vintage of the century" that needs to be touted. I love his own "vintage chart" (which happens to be a blank piece of paper). I laughed when it first came in the mail, and laughed upon seeing it again in the book.

This book gets a most enthusiastic thumbs up. Oh, and by the way, while it is a rather expensive book, the quality of the pages and binding (not to mention the reading material itself) make it worth the money.

Order Inspiring Thirst: Vintage Selections from The Kermit Lynch Wine Brochure

Over All Rating Reviews :
If you could see me now, you'd notice that I'm just the slightest shade of green. This happens everytime I read a book by Kermit Lynch. No, I'm not ill, just envious. Is it really fair that Kermit was blessed as one of our nation's greatest palates AND one of our greatest writers? And if I ever get a chance to hear his band, I understand I'd be jealous of that too.

I found this, his latest collection of wine missives, difficult to put down. His engaging writing style allowed me to clearly imagine tagging along on each of his European sojourns. I imagined standing next to him in every cellar he described, sitting at every meal he journaled.

If you're anything like me, somewhere in the middle of chapter two or three, you'll begin plotting ways to convince your family a vacation in the French wine country beats Disneyland any day.

Where To Buy Bordeaux/Burgundy: A Vintage Rivalry

Over All Rating Reviews :
There seem to be two themes running throughout this book.

First, "terroir" is less about soil, exposure and climate and more about taste, culture and economics. Thus, M. Pitte remarks, just as a great violinist cannot attribute 90% of the quality of his performance to the Stradivarius he plays, neither can a vigneron and winemaker attribute 90% of the quality of his wine to a particular plot of land. While M. Pitte defends "natural" winemaking, including the use of natural yeasts, selection massale and so on, he also rejects the notion that great wine "makes itself." This is an interesting discourse. Pitte seems to believe that the historical development of the "first growths," "super seconds" and "grands crus" is as much a cultural development as an inevitable outcome of the superiority of the chosen sites. He opines that there are plenty of places in Bordeaux and Burgundy that could have evolved into the equivalents of Mouton or Clos Vougeot -- and might still do so if popular demand, investment, talent and politics allow. He also identifies "great growths" that are on land one might not expect to produce top notch wine -- but they do nevertheless. It's an interesting notion, and I'm not sure I disagree.

Second, Bordeaux is cerebral, the wine of strait-laced bankers and financiers, right down to its square shouldered bottles and the Bordelais' obsession with cleanliness and clarity reflected in their tradition of carefully decanting old wines. Burgundy, on the other hand, is wild, sensual, voluptuous, and something of the rogue, a place where a winemaker will gleefully pour the dregs of the bottle into his glass and declare it the best and richest part.

This theme plays itself out in a variety of anecdotes, historical references, quotations from essays and poetry and you name it. When the Bordelais celebrate a great occasion, they do so in a restrained way, says Pitte; while the Burgundians are inclined to sing, dance and whoop it up. A banquet in Bordeaux is a reserved affair; in Burgundy, it likely entails course after course of rich food and wine.

Whether you lean towards Burgundy (as I do) or towards Bordeaux (like many others), this will amuse and entertain. You will see plenty of names you know -- Robert Parker, Michel Rolland, Emile Peynaud, Nicolas Joly, Claude Bourguignon, Henri Jayer, Aubert de Villaine.

Somehow, however, much of this book seems to rely on stereotyping as much as anything else. The writing includes a lot of those old fashioned sexual metaphors that were once common in wine writing -- this wine is a buttoned up schoolgirl, that one is a buxom barmaid, and so on. If this sort of stuff offends, you won't like the book. I simply find it quaint and a bit silly.

There are undeniable differences between the wine trade in Bordeaux, where grand 100 acre estates are owned by reinsurers, banks and luxury goods houses; and Burgundy, where even a heavy hitter may own only a fraction of a hectare of a grand cru like Le Montrachet or Le Musigny. But to read Pitte, one might conclude that the folks who make and sell Bordeaux are from Mars, while their counterparts in Burgundy are from Venus -- and each may well be a different species that is unable to interbreed.

It's a bit much.

Still, Pitte makes some smart and provocative observations along the way, and the book is a hoot to read.
